Thank you so much for visiting my blog! Who am I? I would describe myself as a person who never stops, and each time is excited by a new hobby, a new passion, a new experience. I am a positive person who believes that one day without a smile is a lost day, and the journey and the discovery of new cultures are what brings the smile in my life.

Rome & Lazio

We visited Lazio region in a very hot summer (bad idea to visit it in August!) for a trip about ten days long.
We first stayed in Rome for a few days, then moved to Tivoli to see Villa D’Este and slowly went down to the southern part of Lazio, where we took the ferry to relax for a few days in the Island of Ponza. Despite the truly devastating heat, this vacation in Lazio truly enchanted us, from the wonders of Rome, to the princely gardens of Villa d’Este, to the masterpieces of art in the Vatican museums, to the magic of Isola del Liri. Lazio is truly one of the most complete regions in Italy, where culture, art, history and nature meet. And let’s not forget the relaxation that was fundamental after days spent among crowds of tourists, Lazio also offers this on its magnificent island of Ponza, with lovely beaches and romantic sunsets. And let’s not forget one thing: Roman food is undoubtedly my favorite, it has no comparison and I am literally addicted to it!

10 things to do in Rome & Lazio

1. TOSS A COIN IN TREVI FOUNTAIN

The Trevi Fountain is one of the most iconic symbols of Rome, a baroque masterpiece that enchants visitors from all over the world. Located in the heart of the city, this majestic fountain was completed in 1762 to a design by Nicola Salvi and celebrates the power of water, with Neptune at the center surrounded by tritons and sea horses. The sound of flowing water creates a magical atmosphere, perfect for taking unforgettable photos. Don’t forget to toss a coin: this gesture is said to ensure a return to Rome. Visit it in the evening to admire its illuminated charm, when the crowd thins out and the enchantment becomes even more evocative. An absolute must for anyone visiting the Eternal City!

2. ADMIRE THE MASTERPIECE OF THE SISTINE CHAPEL IN VATICAN CITY

Vatican City, the smallest independent state in the world, is a place rich in art, faith and history. Inside, the Vatican Museums guard priceless treasures, but the real jewel is the Sistine Chapel, famous for Michelangelo’s breathtaking frescoes. The ceiling, with the Creation of Adam, and the Last Judgment on the altar wall, leave every visitor speechless. St. Peter’s Basilica, with its imposing dome, is another unmissable masterpiece, offering an incredible panoramic view of Rome. Book tickets in advance to avoid long queues and plan a morning visit to best experience this unique place in the world, where art and spirituality blend in an unforgettable experience.

3. GO UP ALONG THE BRIDGE TO CIVITA DI BAGNOREGIO

Civita di Bagnoregio, known as “the dying city”, is a village suspended in time, perched on a tuff hill in the middle of the Calanchi Valley, in Lazio. Reachable only on foot across a long bridge, this village enchants with its unique atmosphere and breathtaking views. Its cobbled streets, stone houses and spectacular views make every corner a perfect place for a photo. Founded by the Etruscans, the village retains a thousand-year history, but is threatened by erosion which slowly consumes its foundations. Ideal for a day trip, Civita also offers local culinary delights in its characteristic restaurants. A magical and surreal place, which seems to have come out of another era.

4. RELAX IN THE ISLAND OF PONZA

The island of Ponza, pearl of the Pontine archipelago, is a corner of paradise in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Famous for its crystal clear waters, hidden bays and sea caves, it is a perfect destination for those seeking relaxation and natural beauty. Cala Feola, the Natural Pools and Pilate’s Cave are among the unmissable places. The port, with its pastel-colored houses, is the lively heart of the island, ideal for an evening walk or a fresh fish dinner. Explore it by boat to discover hidden corners and breathtaking views. Quiet in the low season and livelier in the summer, Ponza offers a perfect mix of nature, sea and Mediterranean authenticity. A jewel that conquers at first glance!

5. STARE AT THE WATER GAMES IN VILLA D’ESTE

Villa d’Este, located in Tivoli, is an extraordinary masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, famous for its spectacular gardens and water games. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this villa offers a unique experience thanks to its scenographic fountains, such as the Fontana dell’Ovato and the majestic Fountain of Neptune. Walking among terraces, stairways and paths surrounded by greenery, surrounded by the sound of water, is an enchanting experience. Inside, the frescoes in the rooms leave you speechless, but the real protagonist is the garden, considered a living work of art. Visit it at sunset to enjoy an even more evocative atmosphere. Perfect for a day trip from Rome, Villa d’Este is an unmissable stop for those who love art, history and nature.

6. IMMERSE YOURSELF IN AN ATMOSPHERE OF PEACE AND SERENITY AT THE SANCTUARY OF SACRO SPECO

The Sanctuary of Sacro Speco, also known as the “Swallow’s Nest,” is a breathtaking spiritual retreat nestled into the rock in Subiaco, Lazio. This Benedictine monastery, built in the 13th century, is renowned for the cave where St. Benedict spent years in prayer and meditation. Its medieval frescoes, including one of the oldest portraits of St. Francis of Assisi, are an invaluable artistic treasure. Spread over multiple levels, the sanctuary offers stunning views of the Aniene Valley, enhancing its atmosphere of serene mysticism. Perfect for a spiritual journey or for art and history enthusiasts, Sacro Speco invites visitors to experience profound tranquility and reflection far from the noise of modern life.

7. VISIT ONE OF THE 7 WONDERS OF THE MODERN WORLD: THE COLOSSEUM

The Colosseum, an iconic symbol of ancient Rome, is a must-visit for history lovers and travelers alike. This monumental amphitheater, built in 80 AD, once hosted gladiator battles, animal hunts, and grand spectacles for up to 50,000 spectators. Walking through its towering arches and exploring its underground chambers offers a glimpse into the grandeur and brutality of Roman entertainment. The structure’s sheer size and architectural ingenuity are awe-inspiring, making it a true masterpiece of engineering. Visit early in the morning or at sunset to avoid crowds and capture stunning photos. Don’t miss the nearby Roman Forum and Palatine Hill for a complete journey through ancient Rome. A visit to the Colosseum is not just a step back in time but an unforgettable experience of one of history’s greatest wonders.

8. ENJOY THE SOUND OF RUSHING WATER OF ISOLA DEL LIRI WATERFALL

Isola del Liri is a hidden gem in the Lazio region, famous for its unique charm and natural beauty. What makes this small town truly special is the stunning waterfall, the Cascata Grande, located right in the heart of the historic center. The Liri River splits the town, creating a magical atmosphere with the sound of rushing water echoing through its streets. Explore the medieval Castle Boncompagni-Viscogliosi perched above the waterfall, or enjoy a leisurely stroll through the charming old town. Isola del Liri is perfect for a day trip to immerse yourself in a picturesque setting blending history, nature, and tranquility. Visit during the summer months for cultural events and festivals that bring the town to life. A true Italian treasure waiting to be discovered!

9. GET ADDICTED TO ROME’S TYPICAL PASTA DISHES

Carbonara and cacio e pepe are two of Rome’s most iconic pasta dishes, offering a true taste of Italian culinary tradition. Carbonara, made with eggs, Pecorino Romano, guanciale, and black pepper, is a rich and creamy delight (without the use of cream!). Every bite is a perfect balance of savory and indulgent flavors. On the other hand, cacio e pepe is a masterpiece of simplicity, combining just Pecorino Romano and black pepper with pasta water to create a silky sauce that clings to each strand of pasta. Both dishes showcase the magic of quality ingredients and skillful preparation. Whether enjoyed in a cozy trattoria or a high-end restaurant, these classics are a must-try for any food lover visiting Rome. Prepare to fall in love with the essence of Italian cuisine, one plate at a time!

10. GET LOST IN THE NARROW, COBBLESTONE STREETS IN TRASTEVERE

Trastevere is one of Rome’s most charming neighborhoods, known for its narrow, cobblestone streets, vibrant nightlife, and authentic Roman atmosphere. With its medieval buildings, colorful facades, and ivy-covered walls, it feels like stepping into another time. Wander through piazzas like Piazza Santa Maria, where the stunning basilica of the same name dominates the square, or explore the many hidden gems tucked away in alleyways. In the evening, the area comes alive with locals and tourists enjoying dinner in one of its many trattorias and wine bars. Trastevere is a perfect blend of history, culture, and laid-back Roman life, making it an essential stop for anyone looking to experience the heart of the Eternal City. Whether for a relaxing stroll or a lively evening out, Trastevere offers a memorable slice of Roman charm.

When to go?

Winter

Winter, from December to February, is mild. Sunny days can also occur in this season, and can be mild during the day, but they are often cold at nigh.

Spring

Spring is a mild and relatively rainy season. In March, the first spring days alternate with a few colder days, still with a winter flavour.

Summer

Summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny; clear days are the norm, especially in July and August.

Autumn

Autumn, from September to November, is mild and humid, with sunny days alternating with periods of cloudy skies and rain, which become more and more frequent.

For a beach holiday along the coasts and islands of Lazio, the best period is summer, particularly in July and August, given that they are the warmest and sunniest months, and when the sea is also warmer.
To visit the cities, given that it can be very hot in summer, you can choose the periods from mid-April to mid-June and from September to early October. In June the weather is often excellent, but sometimes it can be very hot, especially in the second half of the month.
